Star College hosted its 15th Annual Horizin Mathematics Competition Awards day on Saturday 5 August to commemorate the top 200 achievers in the Horizon Mathematics Competition and to acknowledge them for their exceptional mathematical ability.  Guest speaker , Dr Mbokazi, retired Acting Superintendent General for the Department of Education, commented on the fundamental importance inspiring mathematics in the primary phase.   Our first round accommodated 4838 students, from over 38 schools,  which lead to the second round of 827 students being eligible to write. Students from 29 schools from grade 5, 6 and 7 were successful at the Top 200 awards function. The first student of each grade will received a MATHS DICTIONARY SPONSORED BY ADAMS and a CHESS game.   The top 10 students prizes are as follows. Each learner received a maths dictionary sponsored by Adams and the following:   10th Place          A BOARDGAME – 30 SECONDS - SPONSORED BY Ezimpilo Publishing. 9th /8th Place       A watch sponsored by Ahmed Asmal Accounting Firm. 7th Place               A Bicycle sponsored by Horizon Educational Trust - a Raleigh Alpine, 21 Speed, V Brake, kick stand and aluminum rims 6th   Place           A Bicycle sponsored by Almina Trading - a Raleigh Alpine – 21 speed, V Brake , Kick Stand and aluminum Rims 5th   Place           A Bicycle sponsored by Marshall Security - a Totem XC100,  21 speed, V Brakes and alloy Rims 4th   Place           An IPOD with wireless headset 3rd   Place           A Samsung Galaxy Tab E - sponsored by Nashua Pinetown. 2nd   Place          A Notebook sponsored by Nashua Pinetown. 1st Place              An Apple IPAD 5 sponsored by Gem Schoolwear.   Over and above these prizes were AWARDS for the top 3 schools whose learners achieved the Top 3 positions and the prestigious Overall School Achiever Trophy which was calculated by the number of students from a particular school reaching the top 200 calculated by the combined marks they achieved. The winners were: 10TH – Zoe Pearson , Grade 6 from Durban Girls’ College 9TH – Priyasha Naidoo, Grade 7 from Westville Senior Primary 8TH – Amy Sang, Grade 7 from Durban Girls’ College 7TH – Jaskaran Rajaruthnam, Grade 6 from Manor Gardens Primary. He also received a CHESS SET as he was the TOP GRADE 6 learner! He was also Top of Grade 5 the following year. 6TH – Hannah Hansa, Grade 7 from Durban Girls’ College 5TH – Ilyas Suliman, Grade 7 from Berea West Primary 4TH -  Sara Sparks, Grade 7 from Durban Girls’ College   LACHELLE DUGGAN FROM NASHUA PINETOWN handed over the Top 3 prizes along with jackets sponsored by Gemschoolwear, Dictionaries from Adams Bookstore and Mathlete T-shirt:   3RD – Wade Reddy, Grade 7 from Howick Prep School 2nd – Erynn Geddie, Grade 7 from Clifton Preparatory Nottingham Road   Erynn was the Top in Grade 5 in 2015 and Top in Grade 6 in 2016 and he performed outstandingly in his achievement this year   1st Place – Young Kim, Grade 7, from Durban Girls’ College   Young Kim achieved 3rd place Nationally in South Africa! Please note that this means she  came 3rd from over 50 000 entrants from 369 schools in South Africa!!   Dr S Mbokazi handed over the Top Educator Trophies to:

  The School Trophy Awards went to Howick Prep School, Clifton Prep School Nottingham Road and Durban Girls College.   The final award for the Overall placement was received by the principal of DURBAN GIRLS COLLEGE!!!   The day was filled with excitement and amazing prizes in the celebration of mathematics.  Another outstanding ceremony hosted by Star College offering smiles form learners from all schools! Well done to the Top 200 Mathematicians!
