Horizon Mathematics Competition

Star College held its 12th annual  Horizon Mathematics Competition  this year which  hosted over 6000 first round entries from 130 schools, and was followed by 750 second round entries from 39 schools. Learners from Grade 5 to Grade 7 wrote the exams.  The first round was held at the schools and the second round written at Star College. The Top 200 learners were celebrated at an Awards Day Function held at Star College on Saturday 3 August. This was an exciting, nail biting day of suspense as the learners were called up from 206 to the first place achiever. Each learner received a certificate and a token gift with the successful  Top 10 Learners receiving the following:

 

10th Place, A Parker Pen and Maths Dictionary    –                              won by Jason Wing from Howick Prep

9th Place, A Scientific Calculator and Maths Dictionary –                   won by Joshua Christopher from Manor Gardens

8th Place, A Scientific Calculator and Maths Dictionary –                   won by Riolan Moodley from Glenwood Prep

7th Place, A 30 Seconds Board Game and Maths Dictionary –         won by Kayrav Naidoo from Crawford Prep

6th Place, A Minx Watch and Maths Dictionary –                                  won by Antonia Grindrod from Durban Girls College

5th Place, A Surfskate and Maths Dictionary –                                       won by Edward Yeo from Umhlali Prep

4th Place,  A 21 Speed Bicycle and Maths Dictionary –                        won by Joseph Foxon from Manor Gardens Primary

3rd Place, A Digital Camera and Maths Dictionary –                             won by Andrea Plumbley from Durban Girls College

2nd Place, An IPOD Nano and Maths Dictionary –                                 won by Francis Moran from Glenwood Prep

1st Place, A personal Laptop and Maths Dictionary –                          won by Aaron Naidu from St Henrys Marist College

 

As this is a National Competition held at each of the Star College schools in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, a prize was offered to the National Winner.  This year KZN swept the floor with AARON NAIDU’s results! Well don Aaron and KZN! Aaron received a further prize for his great achievement.

 

Manor Gardens Primary received the TOP SCHOOL AWARD as the most successful school in KZN, reflecting the dedication of its learners and teachers in the field of Mathematics.  The guest speaker, Mr Moses Mogamberry , Chief Education Specialist KZN Department of Education, commended Star College for its stance on Maths and Science and mentioned his continued support of the schools program in advancing Mathematics in young learners.
