Ten Stars fly South Africa’s flag high at the International competition in Kenya

Ten learners from Star College, Westville, recently hit the runway filled with anticipation as they set off for Kenya to enter the Golden Climate International Project Competition. 101 Projects were entered from 19 different countries from over 180 learners from across the globe. The competition offered 5 categories: Agriculture, Energy, Environment Design, Engineering and Junior Environment. 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and various Bronze medals were offered in each category. The learners that represented South Africa, and their school Star College, walked away with 5 Gold medals, 4 Silver medals and 1 Bronze!

Gold medals were awarded to:
Kiaran Chetty, M Sahal Kamroodeen, Abdullah Bada, Yasteel Bhimma and Tharanya Pillay

Silver medals were awarded to :
Siyabonga Hlubi, Ali Murtaza Caunye, Kamran Subramanien and Tristan Divasan Moodley

Bronze medal was awarded to:
Akshay Maharaj

The awards function was held at the light Academy, Nairobi where Star College learners stole the stage with their top notch, original ideas and methodology. Olympiad co-ordinator, Mr Tahir Denli, Chemistry educator, was proud of the learner’s excellent level of entry. “Our learners produced excellent results! Their experience was of higher value than their medals as many of them had never travelled on a plane or had the opportunity to engage in another culture and country. One of the learners, Ali, commented how he now appreciates his family and his country from the experience.”
Principal, Mr Osman Karaayvaz, thanked Mr Denli for his outstanding mentoring of his team and was extremely thrilled with the results from the learners.
