FFS Expo for Young Scientists

FFS Expo for Young Scientists is a science expo whereby school learners in grades 8 to 12 in Kwa-Zulu Natal are invited to submit a science project and compete for prestigious medals or valuable prizes.

The Expo has been running for over 30 years and was set up in order to encourage young people to engage with all the steps in the scientific process. Pupils have to identify something worth investigating, design a scientifically accurate way of investigating this identified phenomenon, carry out the investigation, collect the results, analyse them and draw a logical conclusion from these results.

Star College Boys had approximately 30 entries and six of these boys were awarded with medals containing envelopes with cash prizes. The two gold medallists from Star College Boys High were Tyrique Byroo, grade 9 and Tashic Natal, grade 10. Tashic Natal was also awarded the best senior project. In addition to the medallists winning cash prizes, they were also awarded with an all-expenses paid, four day tour of various places of scientific interest in KZN and Gauteng such as the World Heritage Site of the ‘Cradle of Mankind’, the National Energy Commission, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Johannesburg Planetarium, the Tswaing Meteorite Crater, etc.

Star College Boys High is proud to say that of the30 entries, every student was awarded with either a first class, second class, or third class medal, which makes all of our Star College pupils winners! Star College wishes the students who are going on the four day tour, safe traveling and hope they enjoy their reward for being such exceptional young scientists.
