Eskom International Science Expo 2014

Interest, consistent work and passion for science are the key ingredients for participation and success in the Eskom International Science Expo 2014.

The Eskom ISF is held annually at the Birchwood Hotel and in Boksburg, Gauteng. From Star College, four students participated, they were, Tyrique Byroo (9) , Yasheel Jaganath (11) , Daverin Nadesin (11) and Tashic Natal (10).   In the view of the accommodation, there is no other way to describe the hotel rooms other than amazing! In the hotel room that I stayed in there were two king beds, a kitchen and a lounge. Aside from all these luxurious factors the actual judging experience is nerve racking.

Performance standards have escalated from previous years and it may look daunting for some but the end result is worth the while. The judging is so exhilarating yet stressful as the panel of judges comprised of academics, internationals, sponsors and professional judges. It was an honour and a privilege to represent not only Star College Boys’ High, but also the entire Kwa-Zulu Natal Central Region. Winning awards is just the cherry on top of the entire package.

This year Star College did exceptionally well. Three students won R5000 special award prizes from various sponsoring companies. Star College Boys’ High was the only school to have students bringing home the big bucks from our district. These students were, Tyrique Byroo, Daverin Nadesin and Tashic Natal. At the second awards evening Star College performed even better! Two students were awarded with silver medals, namely Daverin Nadesin and Tashic Natal. Last but certainly not least, Star College was awarded a gold medal. Tyrique Byroo received a gold medal along with R500, a one year subscription to Quest science magazine and a 100% scholarship to Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape. The cream on top of the cherry was being selected for an International Expo in 2015 to represent South Africa. As prestigious as all these awards sound, the main objective of the Eskom International Science Expo is just for students to display their passion and innovations in the scientific field and to meet new people and make new friends from around the country and from other countries such as Namibia and Mexico. Hopefully many new young scientists would feel inspired to join Expo next year and display their flare for science!
