The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists 2013 in Boksburg, Gauteng

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists 2013 took place from 25 September to 28 September 2013 at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Center in Boksburg, Gauteng. This was the 33rd installment of the International Science Fair Program.

Over 800 finalists from primary and secondary schools from the nine provinces of South Africa participated in addition to six other African Countries.

There were 25 categories at the Expo including Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science and Applications, Earth Sciences, Energy, Engineering, Innovation and Technology with a total of 652 projects being displayed.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Central region included 32 learners with 26 projects, eight of which were finalists from Star College. Out of the 26 Projects, 21 won medals, making this a record distinction for the region.

On Wednesday, 25 September 2013, all finalists had to register and set up their projects in the Conference Hall. Each finalist was presented with a name badge and an Eskom sponsored kit which included a jacket and a bag.

On Thursday, 26 September 2013, after a morning of fun activities, each entrant was interviewed by 3 judges. Creativity, originality and knowledge of one’s project were examined by the judges. During that evenings dinner ceremony there was a gift exchange between entrants.

On Friday, 27 September 2013, the expo was open to the public. All entrants were expected to be at their projects at all times to discuss their projects and answer any questions about their project from public viewers.

On Friday evening there was a special awards ceremony where six KZN entrants received awards. Three of the six KZN learners were from Star College. The three learners, Tyrique Byroo, Tashic Nataal and Sachin Thakur were awarded certificates and prizes for their efforts.

On Saturday, 28 September 2013, the final day of the expo, all projects were viewed by ministers and VIP’s only. Awarding of medals took place thereafter.

There were a total of 4 bronze medals won by Star College.
